In the distant future, as the galaxy is being colonized, humanity goes to war against the Dracs, a reptilian race from the planet Draco as both races fight over the control of many worlds. During a space battle, space pilot Willis Davidge crashes on Fryine IV, a volcanic planet. Willis finds he isn't alone and finds a Drac named Jeriba Shigan has also crashed on the planet. Both stranded on Fryine IV, Both Davidge and Jeriba both put aside their differences and their hatred for each other as they both try to survive on the planet, where they learn of each other's cultures and form a friendship.
On a distant planet, at the height of the war between the Dracon and Terran Empires, two military pilots crash in the heat of battle. One is Terran, one is Drac. Each is a repulsive alien to the other. Each is a professional warrior, filled with hatred for his blood enemy. Now, marooned on a hostile world, they have a choice. They can complete their missions in a mutual pact of violence and death. Or they can do the most painful thing any Human or Drac has ever done: reach out and begin the new age of understanding that is struggling to be born.
&quot;Enemy Mine&quot; takes place in the future, when humankind no longer wages war among its own, but now does battle with an alien race called the Dracs. Dennis Quaid is Davidge, a fighter pilot who crashes on a remote planet while engaged in battle with a Drac (Louis Gossett, Jr.). The Drac has survived its own crash landing, and the two opponents are initially hostile and mistrustful towards one another. But they realize that they will have to rely on each other in order to continue surviving. Over time, they become friends.<br/><br/>An unfortunate box-office flop in its time, this charming, likeable film can be seen as an 80s sci-fi update of the 1968 classic &quot;Hell in the Pacific&quot;. Its themes come through loud and clear: we should at least try to appreciate each other, and celebrate our differences, and not be quick to make judgments. The story can be seen as a metaphor for any sort of bigotry, and the path to understanding. Ultimately, it can&#39;t help but become a little too precious; still, it&#39;s solidly entertaining as it manipulates the emotions and delivers the thrills.<br/><br/>Quaid and Gossett play this superbly. Reunited two years after &quot;Jaws 3-D&quot;, they share a great chemistry all the way down the line. They make their scenes alternately tense, touching, and also humorous. Yes, the film does have a light touch at times, especially when the Drac (whom Davidge nicknames &quot;Jerry&quot;) is led to believe that Mickey Mouse is some great mind back on Earth!<br/><br/>Wolfgang Petersen does a commendable job with the direction, as he follows up his smashing North American debut feature, &quot;The NeverEnding Story&quot;. But the two gentlemen who really need to take a bow are production designer / art director / matte artist Rolf Zehetbauer and makeup effects creator Chris Walas. Zehetbauer creates an amazing look for this production; filmed both in German studios and on location in the Canary Islands, it actually looks like it&#39;s taking place on another planet. And Walas&#39; reptilian-like makeup is most impressive.<br/><br/>With soaring music by Maurice Jarre, a typically fun supporting performance by notable screen heavy Brion James, two cool creature species (one predator, one prey), and excellent widescreen photography, this makes for quite an engaging show. At least it did manage to find an audience later on video.<br/><br/>Seven out of 10.
Not worth watching, it&#39;s really a very poor rehash of a much better film (Hell in The Pacific), two intergalactic enemy&#39;s meet and become bosom buddies after being stranded on some remote God forsaken planet, (which just so happens to have oxygen and water). True to form of similar propaganda Hollywod war movies, the earthling prisoner displays the arrogant superiority bravado, threatening his captor from a no-win position. The script is very poorly written, the acting (if you can call it that) very poor and the story line is ever so boringly predictable. The alien make-up (mask) is ridiculous, but it&#39;s intelligence and personality are worthy of praise and perhaps a reflection of what Christianity is really all about. It learns English very fast, including a lot of abstract words, and it displays ab superior humanitarian/Christian attitude than the selfish ego-centric aggressive earthling(s). It&#39;s a story of a lot of the movies cliché&#39;s strung together: white vs black, aggression vs compassion, homo- vs hetero-sexuality, war and peace, co-operation vs defiance, the individual vs authority, man against nature and man/alien, survival, co- operation and honor. All this was done much much better in it&#39;s precursor, Hell in The Pacific.

In Germany the movie was shown in a version that is 1 minute longer than the International Version. Two scenes were prolonged. Be aware that the German DVD only features the International Version. Yes. Enemy Mine is based on a novella written by <a href="/name/nm0519530/">Barry Longyear</a> in 1979 No. Author <a href="/name/nm0519530/">Barry Longyear</a> was quoted as stating that 20th Century Fox asked him to write in the subplot involving the scavenger mine because the audience would not figure out that the title &#39;Enemy Mine&#39; was actually a play on the phrase &#39;My enemy.&#39;
